At our school, we use a range of assessments throughout the academic year to help us understand each child's progress, identify strengths, and ensure that any gaps in learning are addressed. Assessment information is used to support teaching and learning and to help every child achieve their full potential.

GL Assessments

Children in Years 1 to 5 take part in GL Assessments at the end of the academic year (Term 6). In addition, Year 1 children complete GL Assessments in Term 1 to provide an early benchmark of their attainment.

These assessments help us to:

  • Benchmark children's attainment against age-related expectations.
  • Identify strengths and areas for development.
  • Highlight any gaps in learning.
  • Inform future teaching and intervention planning.

NGRT (New Group Reading Test)

Children in Key Stage 2 complete the New Group Reading Test (NGRT) to assess their reading skills and comprehension.

These assessments are:

  • Completed online
  • Taken in a classroom setting
  • Completed using headphones to support concentration and accessibility
  • The results help teachers understand reading ability and identify any additional support that may be required.

Phonics Screening Check

All Year 1 children take part in the Phonics Screening Check each June. During the check, children read 40 words, made up of a mixture of:

  • Real words.
  • Pseudo (nonsense) words.

The assessment measures children's phonic decoding skills and their ability to apply phonics knowledge when reading unfamiliar words.

If a child does not meet the expected standard in Year 1, they will have the opportunity to retake the check in Year 2.

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

Children in Year 4 complete the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC).

This online assessment tests:

  • Knowledge and recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12
  • Speed and accuracy when answering multiplication questions
  • The check helps ensure children have the fluency in times tables needed to support their wider mathematical learning

Year 6 SATs

Children in Year 6 complete their Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) in May.

The assessments include:

  • Reading
  • Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG)
  • Mathematics Paper 1: Arithmetic
  • Mathematics Paper 2: Reasoning
  • Mathematics Paper 3: Reasoning

These assessments provide information about children's attainment at the end of Key Stage 2 and support transition to secondary school.

Preparing Children for Success

Throughout the year, we carry out a range of practice and mock assessments. These are designed to familiarise children with assessment processes, question formats and testing conditions.

By providing regular opportunities to experience assessments in a supportive environment, we aim to:

  • Build confidence
  • Reduce anxiety and worry
  • Help children understand what to expect
  • Enable every child to perform at their very best when completing statutory or standardised assessments
  • Our priority is always to ensure that assessments are carried out in a positive and supportive manner, allowing children to showcase their knowledge and skills with confidence.
