It seems only yesterday we were finishing for the holidays and now we are returning for Term 1. I do hope you have had a wonderful time over the summer and enjoyed having your children at home with you.
As the new term begins I would like to welcome all the children back to school and I look forward to seeing as many of you at school over the next year as possible. To all the new children and staff joining us this year I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our very special school. I know we will offer them support and help, in order to make them feel at home as quickly as possible. A full list of all the staff can be found on the website.
Once again we have been busy over the summer painting and decorating and freshening up large areas of the school. A big thank you to everyone who has made this happen. We now have a new sound system in school thanks to the fund raising efforts of all of our families. This will be a real asset when we come to assemblies and performances. This highlights how we as a community can work together to bring about huge changes that give our children greater opportunities at school.
We will continue to embed our Values Education over the year and our first value for the month of September will be Respect. This is a value that has a very high profile at Drove. The children know that they are unique and everyone is valued. They show respect for themselves and each other and the children are able to demonstrate this through their actions.
This term’s topic overviews can be seen on the website under the different year groups. Each year group will be holding curriculum meetings which will give parents an opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the curriculum and understand some of the ways in which the children can be supported at home. We will also be holding our Parent /Teacher discussion meetings towards the end of Term 1.
Our focus this year remains Reading. We need the children to read as often as possible both at home and in school. The children need to experience a range of reading materials including: fiction, non fiction, comics, newspapers, poetry books, magazines, leaflets, etc. If you haven’t already done so it would be fabulous for the children to join the local library so that they can borrow more books.
We have purchased a new reading programme called ‘Reading Eggs’ which is primarily for KS2. This will give the children access to over 2000 books on line. Hopefully this will make it easier for the children to read good quality books anytime and anyplace.
One of our biggest issues year on year has been long term absence due to holidays during term time. This has an extremely detrimental effect on the children and is something that the Government are more determined than ever to try and stop. Individual children’s absence will be monitored and those falling below 90% will be subject to a letter and interview with the Educational Welfare Officer and myself or Mrs Murphy. Please help your children by ensuring they are in school every day.
We are all looking forward to an exciting new year and with your continued support we will achieve excellent outcomes for all the children at Drove.
